Javier Tellez is an Assistant Professor of Geology at Colorado Mesa University, specializing in applying new technologies such as machine learning and 3D modeling to geoscience challenges. His research focuses on sedimentology, stratigraphy, and depositional systems analysis, particularly in energy resource contexts. He integrates outcrop, seismic, and UAV-based data to evaluate reservoir rock characteristics. Tellez teaches courses on petroleum geology, geophysics, and reservoir modeling, emphasizing hands-on laboratory and fieldwork.
Education: PhD in Geosciences (University of Oklahoma), MS in Geology (University of Oklahoma), and BS in Geology (Universidad Nacional de Colombia).
Research interests include multiscale studies of depositional systems, reservoir heterogeneity, and applications of machine learning in characterizing sedimentologic and stratigraphic variability. His work often involves collaborations with students on projects combining field-based UAV modeling and computer-based tools.
His publications span topics like 3D geological modeling, deep-water stratigraphy, and seismic attribute analysis in basins such as the Piceance Basin and Carnarvon Basin. He has contributed to understanding fluvial-paleovalley architecture and petrofacies variability in unconventional reservoirs.
Labs/Teams: Engages in projects involving UAV photogrammetry, machine learning for facies classification, and 3D reservoir modeling. Collaborates with industry and academic partners to bridge geoscience theory and practical reservoir evaluation.
