Stacey Nofziger is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of Undergraduate Studies at The University of Akron. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Arizona (1999), an M.A. from the same institution (1995), and a B.A. from Whitman College (1993). Her research focuses on control theories in criminology, particularly Gottfredson and Hirschi’s General Theory of Crime, and the role of gender identity in deviant behavior. She has explored how self-control influences criminal and deviant behaviors across the life course, including victimization, binge drinking, and bullying. Her work also examines parental self-control and parenting practices as predictors of youth behavior.
Her current projects include studying student mental health and career-readiness skills in sociology courses, often collaborating with undergraduate and graduate students. Notable publications include analyses of gender differences in deviance, the stability of self-control theory, and the impact of maternal self-control on children. She teaches courses such as Criminology, Juvenile Delinquency, and the Sociology of Law.
Nofziger has advised numerous students, fostering collaborative research in areas like victimization reporting, bullying, and binge drinking. Her work bridges theoretical criminology with practical applications in prevention strategies and policy development.
