Srijan Sen is the Frances and Kenneth Eisenberg Professor of Depression and Neurosciences and Director of the Eisenberg Family Depression Center at the University of Michigan. He holds dual roles as a Professor of Psychiatry and Research Professor at the Michigan Neuroscience Institute. His academic journey includes an MD/PhD from the University of Michigan, followed by a psychiatry residency at Yale University before joining Michigan's faculty in 2009.
Dr. Sen's research focuses on physician well-being, depression, and the intersection of genomics and mental health. He leads the landmark Intern Health Study, a longitudinal cohort study involving over 25,000 participants from 100+ institutions. This study explores stress, mood, and resilience in training physicians, yielding insights across genomics, mobile technology, and medical education policy. His work has been featured in high-impact journals like JAMA, BMJ, and the New England Journal of Medicine, with media coverage in major outlets including the New York Times and Time Magazine.
Dr. Sen actively contributes to national initiatives such as the National Academy of Medicine Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being. He is affiliated with multiple interdisciplinary centers, including the Center for Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics, the Global REACH network, and the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation. His recent projects include developing mobile health interventions like the CareQOL app for caregivers of traumatic brain injury patients and investigating circadian rhythm disruptions in healthcare workers.
His research also addresses systemic challenges in medical training, including work-hour policies, sexual harassment prevention, and mental health disparities among physicians. He has spearheaded studies on genetic and environmental factors influencing depression resilience, leveraging large-scale datasets like the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.
Financial support includes a $40 million gift from the Eisenberg Foundation for mental health research and a $17.9 million grant advancing precision mental healthcare. Dr. Sen collaborates across disciplines, bridging clinical practice, technology, and policy to improve healthcare worker well-being and patient outcomes.
