Spyridon Pergantis

Professor Spyridon Pergantis is a distinguished faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Crete, where he has served since 2003, advancing from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor in 2008, and ultimately achieving Full Professor status in 2014. His academic journey began with a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Ioannina in 1988, followed by a PhD from the University of British Columbia in 1994. Prior to his current position, he held research positions at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Utrecht University, and Birkbeck College, University of London.

Professor Pergantis specializes in advanced analytical chemistry techniques, with research focusing on metal speciation analysis (particularly arsenic, selenium, and antimony), novel metal species identification, metal-biomolecule interactions, nanoparticle determination using single particle ICP-MS, and advances in sonic-spray ionization mass spectrometry. His work integrates various separation techniques including HPLC, nanoHPLC, ion mobility spectrometry, and affinity chromatography coupled with multiple mass spectrometry methods. His laboratory at the University of Crete (Room A228) maintains an active research program addressing critical environmental and biological analytical challenges.

His publication record demonstrates consistent research productivity with significant contributions to environmental analytical chemistry, particularly in nanoparticle analysis and metal speciation. Recent work shows expansion into cardiovascular health research through selenium biomarker studies and innovative approaches to undergraduate chemistry education. Professor Pergantis leads a research group focused on developing cutting-edge analytical methodologies with applications spanning environmental monitoring, food safety, and biomedical research.
