Dr Soyeon Kim is a Lecturer at Essex Law School, University of Essex, since September 2023. Her research spans public international law, with a focus on law of the sea, international environmental law, human rights law, third-world approaches to international law, and international relations. She holds a PhD in Law from the University of Cambridge (2023), an LLM in International Law from the University of Edinburgh (2018), and an MA in Political Science (2017) and BA in Political Science and International Studies (2016) from Yonsei University.

Her research emphasizes the intersection of climate change and marine environmental governance, analyzing legal frameworks under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and international treaties. She explores postcolonial critiques of international law through third-world approaches and examines human rights dimensions in maritime disputes and environmental policies. Recent work includes advisory opinions on climate change and the law of the sea.
Dr Kim’s publications appear in journals such as the International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law, Journal of the History of International Law, and Legal Studies. She has advised states on territorial disputes, climate change, and treaty law. She previously served as a Max Weber Fellow in Law at the European University Institute (Italy).
