Sourayan Mookerjea is Professor of Sociology at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Arts, where he directs the Intermedia Research Studio and coordinates RePublicU—a critical university studies initiative. His research examines commons theory, decolonial critique, and media ecologies within contexts of development dispossession.
Mookerjea's interdisciplinary scholarship bridges post-Western Marxism, political ecology, and media studies to analyze converging social-ecological crises. Current projects investigate hydropolitics in South Asia, platform capitalism's media toxicities, and renewable energy transitions amid enduring colonial structures.
His publications exhibit strong theoretical engagement with subaltern resistance, racial capitalism, and cultural politics of energy. Recent works explore insurgent spatial justice, degrowth feminism, and research-creation methodologies. Articles consistently foreground geopolitical difference and counter-hegemonic praxis.
Mookerjea teaches advanced seminars on colonialism/postcolonialism, globalization, and climate justice. As lead investigator for projects like 'Kolkata Wonderland' and 'Toxic Media Ecologies', he develops digital storytelling tools that intermediate research for affected communities.
