Sourav Chatterjee is a Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at Stanford University. He holds dual appointments in the Department of Statistics and the Department of Mathematics. His research focuses on probability theory, mathematical physics, and statistical theory, with notable contributions to areas such as Liouville field theory, spin glasses, and large deviations.
Education: B.Stat and M.Stat from Indian Statistical Institute (2000-2002), Ph.D. in Statistics from Stanford University (2005). Career highlights include roles at UC Berkeley (2005-2009) and NYU (2009-2013) before joining Stanford in 2013.
Research interests include: rigorous analysis of quantum field theories, phase transitions in spin glasses, nonreversible Markov chains, and novel statistical methodologies. Notable works include the proof of the KPZ relation and the development of a new correlation coefficient.
Selected awards: 2023 Fellow of the Royal Society, 2020 Infosys Prize, 2013 Loève Prize, 2007 Sloan Fellowship. His recent publications explore timelike Liouville field theory, spin glass behavior in the Edwards-Anderson model, and spectral properties of nonreversible Markov chains.
Advising: Current PhD students include Rahul Kanekar and Zhihan Li; past advisees have contributed to areas like random graph theory and statistical physics. Active in teaching advanced probability courses and maintaining research groups in mathematical physics and probability.
