Soumik Sarkar is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University, holding positions as Director of the Translational AI Center (TrAC) and Associate Director of the AI Institute for Resilient Agriculture (AIIRA). He leads the NSF-funded COALESCE project and oversees the university's Cyber-Physical Systems minor. His research focuses on machine learning for autonomous systems, with applications in agriculture, materials science, healthcare, and smart infrastructure. Key areas include decision frameworks for cyber-physical systems, multi-agent systems, and safety-critical AI.
Education includes a BE in Mechanical Engineering from Jadavpur University (2006), followed by MS (2009) and PhD (2011) degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics from Penn State University.
Research emphasizes interdisciplinary work combining machine learning, dynamical systems, and statistical mechanics. Current projects address precision agriculture through AI-driven crop monitoring, robotic plant manipulation, and disease prediction via spectral analysis. He also explores reinforcement learning applications in water treatment optimization and driver behavior analysis linked to cognitive health.
Notable roles include leadership in AIIRA and TrAC, which aim to advance resilient agriculture and translational AI solutions. His work spans grants from NSF, USDA, and industry partners, with publications in top journals/conferences on topics like neural radiance fields for plant reconstruction and federated learning algorithms.
Labs include the Self-aware Complex Systems Lab, focusing on adaptive AI systems, and collaborations with the AI Institute for Resilient Agriculture. Future directions prioritize AI ethics in agriculture, scalable ML for resource-constrained environments, and cross-disciplinary solutions for societal challenges.
