Dr. Sotiris Kampanelis is a Lecturer in Economics at the Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University, since January 2020. He holds a PhD in Economics (2019) from the University of St. Andrews and an MPhil in Economics (2016) from the University of Athens. His research spans development economics, economic geography, political economy, and banking.

His research focuses on the long-term effects of historical institutions and colonial legacies on contemporary economic development, particularly in regions like Latin America, the US South, and the Mediterranean. He investigates how ancient trade routes, pre-colonial structures, and historical violence (e.g., lynching) shape modern economic outcomes, with a strong emphasis on empirical methodologies.
Recent publications include analyses of intergenerational mobility linked to US banking reforms and the impact of pre-colonial ethnic homelands on development. His work has appeared in journals such as Oxford Economic Papers, Kyklos, and Journal of Economic Geography.
