Dr. Sophie Yohani is a Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Education. With dual roles as a registered psychologist and academic, she specializes in multicultural counseling, trauma-informed practices, and psychosocial adaptation of refugee and immigrant populations. Her work integrates ecological systems theory and resilience frameworks to address mental health challenges among displaced communities.
Dr. Yohani holds advanced degrees including a PhD, MEd, and BA (Honors), and maintains professional affiliations with organizations like the Canadian Psychology Association and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. She has held an adjunct visiting professorship at Tanzania’s Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences.
Her research focuses on refugee resettlement, trauma recovery, and culturally responsive mental health interventions. Notable projects include studies on Rwandan genocide survivors, Syrian refugee communities, and African immigrant parenting practices. She co-created the "Creating Welcoming Learning Communities" webinar series for educators supporting refugee students.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on counseling psychology, multicultural practice, and child development. Current course offerings for 2025-2026 include EDPY 533 (Foundations of Counseling Psychology), EDPY 537 (School Counseling Skills), and EDPY 635 (Advanced Counseling Specialty).
Dr. Yohani collaborates with community organizations and policy makers to improve mental health services for marginalized groups. Her work emphasizes participatory research models that center community voices in solution-building processes.
