Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversityمعرفی
Sophie Watson is Professor of Sociology at The Open University (UK), holding concurrent positions at the University of East London, University of Bristol, and University of Sydney. Previously Co-Director of the ESRC Centre for Research into Socio-Cultural Change, she currently researches "Spatial Justice in the City" at the Max Planck Institute for Multicultural Societies (MPI-MMG).
Her research centers on urban water as a lens for examining socio-technical networks, cultural meanings, and human-environment interconnectedness across global cities. Complementary projects analyze digital society, street markets as transcultural/transnational spaces, gender dynamics in urban settings, and multiculturalism in everyday life. Watson's work emphasizes the inseparability of social systems from natural environments, particularly through water's role in revealing entangled human-nature relationships.
She actively translates academic insights into policy applications through consulting engagements with Newcastle University, Thames Water, and the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF), demonstrating commitment to real-world impact in urban sustainability and social justice initiatives.
