Dr Sophie Quirk is a Senior Lecturer in Drama and Theatre at the University of Kent, part of the College of Arts. She specializes in comic and popular performance, particularly the social/political impact of stand-up comedy. Her research examines how comedians manipulate audience response and adapt to modern political/societal shifts. She has been at Kent since 2007, joining full-time staff in 2013 after completing her PhD there in 2011.

Research Interests: Focuses on contemporary stand-up comedy's response to 21st-century political/societal changes, grassroots/DIY performance cultures, and the intersection of showmanship with political discourse. Her work bridges performance analysis with sociopolitical critique, emphasizing how humor functions as both resistance and reinforcement.
Teaching: Leads modules like 'Stand-Up Comedy' (including student-run clubs) and 'Creative Project'. Previous roles included directing and modern theatre texts. Supervises postgraduate research on comic performance, popular genres, and performance's societal roles.
Grants & Labs: Collaborates on projects like the Centre for Comparative Politics & Media Research. Her work appears in journals like European Journal of Humour Research and Comedy Studies.
