Simon Weaver is a Reader in Media and Communications at Brunel University London, affiliated with the College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences and the Centre for Comedy Studies Research (CCSR). His work critically examines humor’s role in shaping racist rhetoric, populism, and Brexit-era cultural discourse.
- PhD in Sociology from the University of Bristol (thesis: Humour, Rhetoric and Racism: A Sociological Critique of Racist Humour)
- Former ESRC Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2010-2012) at Loughborough University
Simon’s research spans racist/anti-racist humor, comedy studies, political satire, and media sociology, often intersecting with Zygmunt Bauman’s theories of liquid modernity. His recent publications analyze intersectionality in stand-up, Brexit-related comedy, and the ethics of offensive humor. He co-edited the De Gruyter Handbook of Humor Studies (2024) and authored The Rhetoric of Brexit Humour (2021).
Key scientific awards include the BSA Sage Prize (2011) for his article on anti-racist comedy and grants from Brunel’s Research Seminar Series (2018-2019) and Centre for Global Lives (2019). He supervises PhD students on topics like comedy and populism, humor’s rhetorical function, and media representations of race.
