Sophie Erhardt is a Professor and Head of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology (FyFa) at Karolinska Institutet. Her research focuses on neuropsychoimmunology, particularly the kynurenine pathway's role in psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. She leads a research group exploring immune-brain interactions and develops novel treatments for neuropsychiatric conditions. Dr. Erhardt holds leadership roles in organizations including the Scandinavian College of Neuropsychopharmacology and the International Society of Tryptophan Research.
She earned a PhD in Pharmacology from Karolinska Institutet (2001) and completed postdoctoral training at UC San Diego. Her work has yielded over 140 publications and 16 doctoral student supervisions. Key achievements include identifying KAT III as a critical enzyme in KYNA synthesis and discovering biomarkers like picolinic acid for suicide risk prediction.
Her research integrates experimental neuroscience, clinical psychiatry, and drug development, aiming to bridge basic science and precision medicine. Notable awards include the 2022 Maltz Prize and 2023 Arvid Carlsson Award. She collaborates internationally, including with Mayo Clinic and SciLifeLab's Drug Discovery platform.
Dr. Erhardt teaches pharmacology at undergraduate and graduate levels, coordinating courses like the Single Subject Course in Pharmacology. She focuses on neuropsychopharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, and immune system pharmacology, emphasizing curriculum development and student evaluations.
