Sophie Chevalier

Sophie Chevalier is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Picardie Jules Verne, affiliated with the Department of Human, Social Sciences and Philosophy. Her research spans urban and technological infrastructures, cultural and heritage issues, and methodological cross-sectional analysis.

• Education: PhD in Anthropology from University of Paris X-Nanterre (1992), postdoctoral fellowship at University of Cambridge (1993-1995).
• Research Interests: Economic survival strategies in transition economies (Bulgaria), kinship and social security in Europe, urban anthropology (Paris), ethnographic studies of horse racing and gambling in South Africa and France, circulation of social networks, and history of social sciences.
• Projects: Coordinated European research on kinship and social security (2004-2008), published Paris, résidence secondaire (2013), and led long-term fieldwork in Durban, South Africa (2008-present) on middle-class emergence and daily economic practices.
• Professional Contributions: President of APRAS, board member of AFEA, co-director of www.ethnographiques.org, and active on editorial boards including Ethnologie Française and Human Economy (Berghahn).
• Grants: Funded by IFCE (2019-2023) for research on horse racing and gambling in France, and by IFAS (Institut Français d’Afrique du Sud) for South African studies.
