Julie Kleinman is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Fordham University's Sociology and Anthropology Department. Her research focuses on migration, urban transformation, and social integration in France and West Africa. She holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University (2013), an M.A. from École des hautes études en sciences sociales (2007), and a B.A. from Haverford College (2004).
Her work examines how West African migrants reshape urban spaces and infrastructures in Paris, as detailed in her forthcoming book Adventure Capital: Migration and the Making of an African Hub in Paris. She also studies everyday pan-Africanism in Mali through migrant experiences, deportee rights activism, and returnee political engagement. Her research has been supported by the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and the Mellon Foundation, earning awards from anthropological societies specializing in Europe and global urbanism.
Key publications include analyses of French education's cultural differentiation, transnational kinship practices among Malians, and the socio-spatial dynamics of Parisian migrant hubs like the Gare du Nord. Her Mellon postdoctoral fellowship at Oberlin College and visiting role at Harvard University's W.E.B. Du Bois Institute further highlight her interdisciplinary contributions.
