Dr. Soo-yong Byun is a Professor of Education (Educational Theory and Policy), Demography, and Asian Studies at Pennsylvania State University, with a joint appointment at the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) and affiliation with the Comparative and International Education Program. His research focuses on sociology of education, international comparative education, rural education, and educational policy analysis.
His work examines the roles of shadow education in non-cognitive outcomes and teacher leadership in educator wellbeing and collaboration. He has contributed extensively to journals like American Educational Research Journal, Comparative Education Review, and Sociology of Education, with recent studies on socioeconomic disparities in occupational expectations, private schooling effects, and cross-national teacher value perceptions.
Dr. Byun has received prestigious awards such as the 2024 Best Paper Award from Journal for the Study of Education and Development, 2023 Outstanding Academic Book Award from the Korean National Academy of Sciences, and the 2021 Penn State College of Education Senior Outstanding Research Award. He has served as President of the Korean American Educational Researchers Association (KAERA) and as a visiting scholar at Seoul National University.
