Sonya Cressman is an Assistant Professor of Professional Practice at Simon Fraser University and Evaluation Lead for the Digital Emergency Medicine Unit at the University of British Columbia's Department of Emergency Medicine. She holds a BSc in Biochemistry and Microbiology from the University of Victoria, a PhD in Biochemistry from UBC, and an MBA in Management of Technology from SFU.
Her research focuses on health economics, health equity, and risk prediction, particularly in digital health systems and lung cancer screening. She leads studies on virtual care coordination, telehealth cost-benefit analysis, and policy-driven healthcare equity initiatives. Key partnerships include the BC Ministry of Health, First Nations Health Authority, and Rural Coordination Centre of BC.
Dr. Cressman’s work emphasizes applied distributional cost-effectiveness analysis and learning health systems. Her current projects include the CIHR-funded 'Virtual Bridges' study improving virtual/community care coordination and the AIRWISE lung health initiative. She has secured major grants including CIHR Catalyst (2023-24) and SSHRC Connection Grant (2022-24).
Her publications span telehealth economics, predictive health technology evaluations, and lung cancer screening cost-effectiveness. She collaborates widely on policy-relevant research addressing systemic inequities in healthcare access and resource allocation.
