Sonsoles López-Pernas

Sonsoles López-Pernas is a Research Fellow at the University of Eastern Finland (since 2022), part of the Learning Analytics research unit. She holds a PhD in Telematics Engineering from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain). Her work focuses on learning analytics, game-based learning, and quantitative methods like process mining and network analysis. She leads the CRETIC project, funded by Finland's Research Council, which applies multimodal learning analytics to clinical education. She co-authored the open-access book Learning Analytics Methods and Tutorials: A Practical Guide Using R and developed open-source tools like Escapp (educational escape room platform) and the tna R package for transition network analysis.

Her research interests span educational technology, AI in learning, and dynamic systems approaches to student engagement. She has published over 100 articles in top journals like Computers & Education and IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies. Awards include the 2025 SoLAR Emerging Scholar Award and the 2024 IEEE TCLT Early Career Researcher Award.
