Sonja Marzi is an Assistant Professor at Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands, and a Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her expertise spans Gender Studies, Urban Studies, and Activism, with a regional focus on Colombia and Latin America. She specializes in feminist, anti-racist, and post-colonial theories, particularly in co-producing knowledge with marginalized communities through participatory methods.
Her research addresses gendered urban inequalities, urban trauma, and activism in contexts of crisis, such as conflict displacement and the pandemic. She has pioneered remote participatory visual methods using smartphones to document women’s experiences in urban Colombia. Key projects include examining displaced women’s resistance to violence and their roles in rebuilding emancipatory urban futures, as well as migrant women’s 'right to the city' in Medellín.
Marzi’s work has been funded by the ESRC, Fritz-Thyssen Foundation, and LSE Knowledge Exchange. She collaborates with institutions like Newcastle University and filmmakers in Latin America, emphasizing interdisciplinary and participatory research. Her publications explore themes of social mobility, pandemic impacts, and intersectional analysis in urban contexts.
