Sonia Werner is a Clinical Assistant Professor at New York University (NYU), affiliated with the Department of Comparative Literature and the Gallatin School of Individualized Study. She has taught at NYU since 2016 and previously served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Sarah Lawrence College. Her research bridges literature, philosophy, and the social sciences, focusing on how narrative forms intersect with epistemology and community formations. She holds a B.A. in Literature and Performance from Sarah Lawrence College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from NYU.
Her current research includes a book project, Belated Nations and World Literature: Figuring Realism on the Fringe, examining literary realism and nation-formation in the global 19th century, as well as a project on evidence in literary and visual culture. She has published in journals like Diacritics, NOVEL, and Poetics Today.
Werner teaches interdisciplinary courses on topics like world literature, aesthetics, genre, and everyday life. Her awards include the Dean’s Outstanding Teaching Award in the Humanities (NYU) and the Penfield Fellowship. She is also part of NYU’s Experimental Humanities & Social Engagement (XE) initiative.
