Sara Murphy is a Clinical Associate Professor at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, New York University. She holds a B.A. in Literature from Sarah Lawrence College (1984), an M.A. in Comparative Literature from NYU (1988), and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from NYU (1997). Her research focuses on literature and philosophy, critical theory, feminist and gender studies, and 19th-century literary cultures. Current projects include explorations of consent in literature and political theory, and a collection on sexual violence representation in law and culture. She has taught at NYU, Rutgers, SUNY Albany, and CUNY's York College.

Research Interests: Murphy’s work bridges literary analysis with critical theory, feminist studies, and historical contexts. She examines themes like gender, sexuality, self-representation, and the intersections of law and culture. Her courses include 'Literary and Cultural Theory' and 'Sex, Gender, Nature, Culture.'
Publications: Her work appears in Hypatia, Signs, Philosophy & Social Criticism, and a/b: Auto/Biography Studies, among others. Upcoming essays are in several collections.
