Sonia Rains Ivancic serves as Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Communication, specializing in critical Organizational and Health Communication with a focus on embodied difference (race, class, gender) and materiality's role in social change.
Her research program investigates how community organizing, storytelling, and artistic resistance can reduce inequities while exposing how structures like neoliberalism obstruct justice. Guided by feminist and narrative approaches, she analyzes discourses around work, identity, health, and the body—particularly in food justice contexts—emphasizing how material objects and spaces shape organizational dynamics and marginalized voices.
Dr. Ivancic's core research areas include:
- Organizational Communication
- Health Communication
- Critical Discourse Analysis
- Social Change and Activism
- Food Justice
- Body and Identity Studies
Her scholarship has been published in premier outlets including Communication Monographs, Management Communication Quarterly, and Health Communication, with ongoing work examining food policy, artistic activism, and the production of raced/gendered/classed bodies.
