Sonia Lupien is a Full Professor at the Université de Montréal, holding appointments in both the Faculty of Medicine (Department of Psychiatry and Addictology) and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (Department of Psychology). She directs the Centre d’études sur le stress humain (CESH) and holds a Canada Research Chair in Human Stress. Her research focuses on the effects of stress hormones on brain function across the lifespan, with a particular emphasis on developing interventions like the Dé-stresse et progresse program and mobile apps (iSmart, Réadapp) for stress management.
Education: Dr. Lupien earned her PhD in Neuroscience from Université de Montréal (1993), followed by postdoctoral training at UC San Diego and Rockefeller University.
Research Interests: She investigates how acute and chronic stress impacts memory, mental health, and brain structure. Her work highlights sex/gender differences in stress reactivity and explores interventions to mitigate stress effects in children, adolescents, and adults. Key areas include cortisol regulation, psychoneuroendocrinology, and translational mental health programs.
Grant Highlights: She leads major projects on workplace stress, early childhood interventions, and stress biomarkers, funded by CIHR, FRQS, and Quebec agricultural agencies. Notable grants include the Canada Research Chair (2024–2031) and studies on farmworker stress and livestock well-being (2024–2028).
- Awards: 2018 Prix Jacques-Rousseau (ACFAS), 2018 Femmes de mérite Award, selected as one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 (2002).
