Prof Sonia Kumar is the Founding Executive Dean of Medicine at St Mary’s University in London, leading the new School of Medicine set to admit its first cohort in 2026. She holds a Professor title and has over two decades of experience as a General Practitioner and educationalist, specializing in community-based health and aligning medical education with societal needs. Previously, she served as Associate Dean for Community Engagement at the University of Leeds and Director of Undergraduate Primary Care Education at Imperial College London, where she founded MEdIC (Medical Education Innovation and Research Centre). She also holds Visiting Professor roles at Imperial College London, University of Leeds, and SBV Pondicherry (India).
Education: MBBS (Medicine) from King’s College London, Bachelor of Science, Master’s (Distinction), and Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners.
Research focuses on integrating community priorities into medical education and healthcare workforce development. Her work emphasizes civic engagement via initiatives like CENTRE (Community Engagement Network in Research & Education) to enhance social impact and graduate citizenship skills.
Awards include 19 team recognitions, highlighted by the Imperial President’s Medal and AdvanceHE’s CATE Award. Her contributions span national/international collaborations, external examinations (UCL), and consultancy for FCDO (Mexico) and Pharma sectors.
Advising & Grants: Led award-winning educational programs at Imperial College, emphasizing teaching excellence. Founded MEdIC to drive innovation in medical training aligned with societal needs. Active in global health education networks and policy advocacy.
Labs/Teams: Founded MEdIC research centre at Imperial College London, coordinating multidisciplinary teams to bridge educational theory and community practice.
