Sonia Gauthier is an Associate Professor at the School of Social Work, University of Montreal, within the Faculty of Arts and Science. She is a core member of the RAIV (Applied and Interdisciplinary Research on Intimate, Family, and Structural Violence) and part of the research team 'Domestic Violence: Actors in Context and Innovative Practices.' Her research focuses on judicial and socio-judicial interventions in domestic violence, specialized domestic violence courts, protection orders, and risks of secondary victimization linked to criminal justice interventions.
She has supervised multiple theses, including doctoral studies on human rights-centered social work for migrant women victims of violence, professional perspectives on socio-judicial intervention in Québec, and master's research on family mediation in domestic violence contexts, prevention tools for sexual aggression among adolescents, and the impact of penal and therapeutic measures on perpetrators. She has also led/co-led several grants including 'Trajectories of Life and Service Use among Vulnerable Women Victims of Domestic Violence' (2013-2022) funded by SSHRC, and strategic initiatives like the Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Family Violence and Violence Against Women (CRI-VIFF).
Her teaching includes the course SVS-1005 ‘Introduction to Social Work’ across Montréal and Laval campuses. She actively contributes to interdisciplinary research on domestic violence prevention and policy, collaborating with institutions and researchers across multiple projects since 2007.
