Sonal Khullar is the W. Norman Brown Associate Professor of South Asian Studies at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Arts & Sciences. She specializes in art history of South Asia from the 18th century onward, with a focus on postcolonial art worlds, cosmopolitanism, and critical historiography. Her work integrates anthropology, feminist theory, and postcolonial studies to analyze global art dynamics and regional artistic practices.
Khullar holds a B.A. from Wellesley College and M.A./Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. Prior to Penn, she taught at the University of Washington. Her research has been supported by grants from the College Art Association, ACLS, American Institute of Indian Studies, and others.
Her major publications include Worldly Affiliations (2015), which won prestigious awards, and The Art of Dislocation (forthcoming), examining collaboration and globalization in South Asian contemporary art. She co-edited Old Stacks, New Leaves (2023) on book arts in South Asia and is developing projects on art and war in Sri Lanka and postcolonial art-anthropology intersections.
