Sol Lim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech, affiliated with the College of Engineering. He holds roles as Co-Director of the Occupational Ergonomics and Biomechanics (OEB) Laboratories and Core Faculty at the Occupational Safety and Health Research Center (OSHRC). Lim's research focuses on assessing human motion through wearable sensing technologies, biomechanics, and data analytics to improve workplace safety and accessibility for vulnerable populations, including individuals with mobility impairments. His work emphasizes interventions to reduce occupational injuries and enhance environmental accessibility.
Lim's education includes a Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan (2019), complemented by a Graduate Certificate in Data Science. He also holds an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering (University of Michigan), an M.S. in Industrial Engineering (Seoul National University), and a B.S. in Clothing and Textiles (Yonsei University).
Research interests include wearable technology integration, predictive modeling of human movement risks, and ergonomic interventions. Notable projects involve vibrotactile feedback systems for posture correction, analysis of forklift training in VR environments, and development of accessible yoga instruction tools for visually impaired users.
Lim has received the Best Student Paper Award (HFES, 2019) and leads collaborative projects with industry partners to advance human-robot collaboration in manufacturing. His lab actively explores contextual-aware systems like sit-stand desks to promote healthy behaviors. Current research also addresses cognitive workload assessment in teleoperator-robot-human teams and barriers to online exercise programs for older adults.
Lim advises graduate and undergraduate researchers in industrial engineering and related fields. His lab is part of Virginia Tech's Faculty of Health Sciences and collaborates with the Center for Human-Computer Interaction (CHCI).
