Soham Gupta is an Assistant Senior Lecturer at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Karolinska Institutet since 2025, previously serving as Assistant Professor from 2019-2025. He is a key member of The Systems Virology Lab led by Ujjwal Neogi, focusing on virus-host immune interactions using integrative multi-omics approaches.
Dr. Gupta completed his Ph.D. on translational genomics of HIV-1 subtypes at St. John's Medical College, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, India in 2014. Following this, he conducted postdoctoral research with Prof. Maria Masucci at Karolinska Institutet studying herpesvirus mechanisms of immune evasion.
His research program centers on understanding immune regulation during viral infections, with particular focus on emerging pathogens (Coronaviruses, Zika, CCHFV) and latent viruses (herpesviruses, HIV-1). He employs multi-omics integration with immunology, molecular and cell-biological techniques to unravel complex host-pathogen dynamics. His work spans virology, immunology, molecular biology, and systems biology with emphasis on metabolic-immune crosstalk during viral infections.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on immune-metabolic reprogramming during viral infections, particularly examining how SARS-CoV-2, HIV-1, and other pathogens disrupt host metabolic pathways to evade immune responses. His work frequently employs advanced multi-omics approaches to identify key molecular signatures associated with disease severity and viral persistence.
Dr. Gupta has secured significant research funding, including a current grant from the Swedish Research Council (2022-2025) for his project 'ISG15 at the interface of innate immune response and metabolic pathways during respiratory viral infections,' demonstrating the importance and innovation of his research program.
