Dr Sofya Lyakhova is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Swansea University and Program Leader of the Further Mathematics Support Programme Wales (FMSPW), a Welsh Government-funded initiative. She holds a PhD in Pure Mathematics from the University of Bristol and qualifications in secondary mathematics teaching. Her career spans medical technology, secondary education, and higher education since 2010. Lyakhova’s research bridges pure mathematics (e.g., nonlinear differential equations) and mathematics education focusing on post-16 education, curriculum reform, and technology-enhanced learning in Wales.
Education: BSc (1996) and MSc (1998) in Mathematics from Russia; PhD in Pure Mathematics (2006, University of Bristol); PGCE in Secondary Mathematics (2009, Swansea Metropolitan University). She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Her expertise includes mathematical analysis, curriculum design, and educational policy. Research interests encompass student transition to university STEM degrees, blended learning models, and the role of technology in mathematics teaching. She collaborates with the Welsh Government on curriculum reform projects and leads public engagement initiatives in mathematics.
