Sofie Marhaug is a PhD candidate (employed as Research Fellow) in the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies at the University of Bergen, Norway. Her research integrates literary analysis with political and philosophical inquiry, focusing primarily on German and Norwegian literary traditions.
She completed her Master's thesis in 2015 titled "Monstrous scenes in Franz Kafka's The Missing and The Trial" under Lars Sætre's supervision, establishing her foundational work in Kafka studies.
Marhaug's research examines intersections between literature and ideology, with core interests in Kafka's existential frameworks, Torborg Nedreaas's politically charged narratives, and theoretical engagements with Walter Benjamin's critique of capitalism and Freudian psychoanalysis. Her methodology emphasizes how literary forms interrogate freedom, power structures, and historical memory within socio-political contexts.
Publication trends reveal an evolution from close textual analysis of Kafka (2013-2017) toward contemporary political discourse, notably her 2023 work on Nedreaas's "The Warm Hands" and 2020 public debate on historical monument removal. This trajectory demonstrates increasing engagement with real-world applications of literary theory in democratic discourse.
