Dr. Sofia Vougioukalou is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Adult Social Care Research (CARE) within Cardiff University's School of Medicine. She also serves as the Public Involvement and Engagement Lead for the Division of Population Health and Social Care at the Centre for Trials Research. Leading CARE's dementia thematic group, her expertise spans health inequalities, public involvement in research, and creative methodologies in healthcare. She focuses on improving social care for underrepresented older populations through ethnographic and participatory techniques, such as Experience-based Co-design and photo elicitation.
Her research addresses unmet needs in chronic conditions like dementia, cancer, and Huntington’s Disease, emphasizing culturally appropriate engagement strategies. She co-leads projects on assistive technology for dementia and innovative social prescribing models. Vougioukalou has received multiple awards, including the Dementia Friendly Wales Diversity Award (2021), the Public Involvement Award (2021), and the Cardiff University Celebrating Excellence Award (2022). She is an associate editor at Arts & Health and contributes to initiatives like the MEAD research group and WISERD's Wellbeing Research Network.
Her work bridges policy and practice, with recent studies on refugee healthcare access, deaf communication in dementia care, and LGBTQ+ inclusivity in healthcare settings. She actively advocates for diversity in research, holding roles on Health and Care Research Wales' Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Advisory Group and the All Wales Deaf Mental Health and Wellbeing working group.
