Smith Mehta is an Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Arts, affiliated with the Research Centre for Media and Journalism Studies (CMJS) and the Department of Media, Cultural Industries & Society. His research focuses on digital transformation in screen industries, creator labor dynamics, feminist production cultures, and media globalization. He holds a PhD in Creative Industries from Queensland University of Technology (2021) and has industry experience as an associate producer at Viacom18 Media Pvt. Ltd (Bollywood).
Education: PhD in Media and Communications (2021) from Queensland University of Technology, Australia.
Research interests include media industries (film, streaming, TV), media management (talent agents, multi-channel networks), creator labor (influencers, celebrity culture), feminist production (gender equality in media), and social media entertainment (YouTube/Instagram). His work addresses digital transformation's impact on labor, power hierarchies, and cultural dynamics. Methodologies include ethnography, interviews, and grounded theory.
Recent publications explore censorship in Indian digital media, peripheral creator cultures, gender in production post-#MeToo, and the new screen ecology. His work contributes to UN SDGs related to gender equality and quality education.
Scientific awards include selection as a UNESCO Asia Pacific Creative Specialist (2018-2019). His research has been featured in outlets like International Journal of Cultural Policy and Television and New Media.
