Dr. Smita Kheria is a Senior Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law at the University of Edinburgh’s Edinburgh Law School, serving as Co-Director of the Scottish Research Centre for Intellectual Property and Technology Law (SCRIPT). She holds an LLB (Hons) from the University of Buckingham, an LLM from the University of Cambridge, and a PhD from Queen’s University Belfast. Her research focuses on socio-legal aspects of copyright law, particularly its role in creative practices and technological advancements. She has led UKRI-funded projects examining copyright’s intersection with online communities, arts researchers, and professional creators, with recent work on streaming services in the music industry. Her publications emphasize creators’ perspectives and the disconnect between legal frameworks and real-world practices. She co-authored the widely used textbook Contemporary Intellectual Property: Law and Policy and contributes to cross-disciplinary teaching at the Edinburgh Futures Institute. Academic leadership roles include Vice Chair of the Socio-Legal Studies Association and supervisory editor for SCRIPTed: A Journal of Law, Technology & Society. She actively engages in knowledge exchange, advising organizations like the Edinburgh Fringe Central and Glasgow Zine Library, and advocates for empirical methodologies in IP education.

Her research explores how copyright operates in practice among artists, writers, and digital creators, challenging traditional economic/legal assumptions. Projects include studies on music streaming economics, street art commercialization, and moral rights perceptions. She is completing a monograph (Close Encounters of the Copyright Kind) and a co-edited collection on Legal Geographies of IP.
Her teaching integrates socio-legal research into IP curricula, particularly through the LLM in Intellectual Property Law. She also teaches at the Edinburgh Futures Institute’s MSc in Creative Industries.
