Smarnakis Ioannis is a tenured Lecturer in the Department of Social Anthropology and History at the University of the Aegean. He received his university degree in History and Archaeology from the University of Athens in 1993, followed by postgraduate studies in Byzantine History at the Universities of Athens and Brussels, and a Ph.D. in 2005 with a thesis on 'Renaissance and Byzantium: The Case Study of Plethon'.

His research focuses on the social and cultural history of the late Byzantine era, examining identity construction, political thought, urban revolts, and historiography. Recent work explores narrativity in Mediterranean contexts (13th–16th centuries), spatial representations in Byzantine romances, and comparative studies of political violence in the Zealots' and Ciompi revolts.
Key themes in his publications include the transformation of urban spaces, perceptions of Roman identity post-1453, and utopian/dystopian visions in Byzantine literature. He has co-edited volumes with Routledge and contributed to journals like Byzantina Symmeikta and Scandinavian Journal of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies.
