Slava Epstein is a Professor of Biology at Northeastern University's College of Science. His research focuses on microbial discovery in environmental and human microbiome contexts, emphasizing novel cultivation strategies to access uncultured microbial diversity. Epstein leads the Epstein Lab, which explores microbial survival mechanisms, individuality, and cooperative interactions. Notably, his team developed the iChip technology for isolating previously unculturable bacteria, leading to discoveries like teixobactin and darobactin—novel antibiotics effective against resistant pathogens. His work bridges fundamental science and applied microbiology, addressing bioremediation, biofuel production, and human health applications.
Epstein has been recognized as a Global Thinker of 2015 by Foreign Policy Magazine for his contributions to antibiotic discovery. His research spans diverse environments, including Antarctica, the Cariaco Basin, and human oral/vaginal microbiota. Collaborations with engineers and clinicians highlight interdisciplinary approaches. The Epstein Lab’s innovations in microfluidics and in situ cultivation techniques drive advancements in microbiology and biotechnology.
Key areas include microbial individuality, dormancy exit strategies, and the exploration of extreme environments for new species. His publications span device design, antibiotic mechanisms, and genomic studies. Contributions to conferences and workshops, such as the Skin Microbiota Workshop, underscore his role in shaping microbiology's future directions.
