Associate Professor Sjaan Gomersall is Associate Director and Principal Research Fellow at the Health and Wellbeing Centre for Research Innovation at the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences and a Teaching and Research academic in Physiotherapy at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at The University of Queensland. Established in 2022, the Health and Wellbeing Centre for Research Innovation (HWCRI) is a collaborative, co-funded research centre by The University of Queensland and Health and Wellbeing Queensland, combining world class research expertise in physical activity, nutrition and health with the capacity to deliver evidence-based programs.
Dr. Gomersall specializes in physical activity, sedentary behaviour and health, with research focused on understanding, measuring and influencing physical activity across various populations, particularly adults, with emphasis on chronic disease prevention and management, and physical activity promotion in healthcare settings. She has established herself as a nationally and internationally recognized leader in physical activity and health, serving as President of the International Society for Physical Activity and Health, Co-Lead of the Physical Activity in Healthcare Special Interest Group for the Asia-Pacific Society for Physical Activity, and Consultant for Physical Activity for the World Health Organisation.
Her research demonstrates strong multi-disciplinary collaborations and industry partnerships, particularly with healthcare organisations to build research capacity, evaluate healthcare services, and co-design innovative solutions. She has published extensively with numerous book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, and research reports focusing on physical activity measurement, interventions, and policy. Her recent work examines physical activity interventions for diverse populations including people with disabilities, cancer survivors, university students, and those at risk of chronic diseases.
Dr. Gomersall serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Activity, Sedentary and Sleep Behaviours and has led significant research projects including the ACUMEN trial examining exercise interventions for gynaecological cancer patients, Small Steps for Big Changes implementing diabetes prevention programs, and research on physical activity promotion for people with disabilities.
She has received funding from major sources including the National Health and Medical Research Council and Medical Research Future Fund, supporting her innovative work in translating research into practical healthcare solutions that improve population health outcomes.
