Sivanes Phillipson

Sivanes Phillipson is a Professor and Department Chair of Education at Swinburne University of Technology, leading the School of Social Sciences, Media, Film and Education. She previously served as Dean International and holds a substantive role in the Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Office since 2018. With over 25 years in higher education across Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Australia, her expertise spans transformative learning innovations, global partnerships, and industry-driven strategies. Her research focuses on academic trajectories, at-risk youth, and mixed-method analyses including Leximancer, Rasch modeling, and structural equation modeling.

Education: PhD in Education, Law and Arts Honours degrees, and a teaching qualification. She has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and 13 books, including the Handbook on Families and Education. Phillipson has secured $5.5M in research funding, leading projects like the STEM Hub and initiatives addressing teacher shortages and girls in STEM. She has supervised over 35 HDR students, earning a nomination for the Australian Graduate Research Council Award in 2020.

Grants include the INVERGOWRIE Foundation’s STEM initiatives, Department of Industry’s Pasifika youth programs, and Victorian Education’s Access Quality Teaching initiative. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, policy impact, and community engagement.
