Sionnadh McLean is a Reader in Physiotherapy at the Allied Health Professions Department of Sheffield Hallam University, where she leads the MSc Manual Therapy program and teaches across undergraduate to doctoral levels. She is the Rehabilitation Theme Lead, supervising PhD students and supporting research in rehabilitation adherence and neck/upper limb disability. Her academic career includes roles as a clinical specialist in musculoskeletal care and physiotherapy outpatient manager.
She holds a BSc from Birmingham University (1994), an MSc in Manipulative Physiotherapy from the University of Queensland (1999), and a PhD from the University of Hull (2007), focusing on non-specific neck pain management. Her research explores mechanisms of upper limb disability in neck pain patients, the Single Arm Military Press (SAMP) test for outcome measurement, and strategies to improve rehabilitation adherence.
Key research interests include musculoskeletal physiotherapy, physical activity promotion, and exercise adherence. She has led grants such as the GET UP Neck Trial (funded by ARC, £62,781) and the TURNUP project (NIHR, £87,589). Her work spans systematic reviews, clinical trials, and service evaluations, with a focus on translating evidence into practice.
Notable contributions include developing the SAMP test, investigating barriers to adherence, and evaluating physiotherapy interventions for pulmonary hypertension and MS. She has supervised multiple doctoral students and collaborates on interdisciplinary projects addressing public health needs and musculoskeletal care innovations.
