Simone Colombo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Connecticut. He holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Physics from the University of Fribourg (2017 and 2013, respectively). His research focuses on quantum-enhanced sensing, quantum information technology, and ultracold atomic physics, particularly leveraging cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) and entanglement to advance precision measurements and quantum simulation.
Key professional milestones include postdoctoral research (2017-2022) and a Research Scientist role (2022-2023) at MIT before joining UConn. He leads the Colombo Lab, which develops quantum sensors, optical clocks, and interferometric systems for applications in metrology and fundamental physics. Recent outreach efforts include STEM career showcases and educational demonstrations for K-12 students, emphasizing quantum mechanics principles through hands-on experiments like the Mach-Zehnder interferometer.
His lab’s technical achievements include optical table expansions for advanced setups and collaborations on projects like the Rubidium-85 MOT and polarization paradox demonstrations.
