Simona Liguori is an Assistant Professor of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at Clarkson University, affiliated with the Coulter School of Engineering & Applied Sciences and the Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP). She holds additional roles at the Institute for a Sustainable Environment. Her research focuses on inorganic membranes, membrane reactors, and negative emission technologies to advance clean energy and environmental sustainability.
Education: Ph.D. and M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calabria, Italy. Postdoctoral research at the Institute on Membrane Technology (ITM-CNR, Italy), followed by roles at Stanford University, Colorado School of Mines, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), where she earned awards for her work. She joined Clarkson in 2020 as a Scialog Fellow.
Research Interests: Development of i-SMART membrane reactors for process intensification, hydrogen production from biofuels, molten salt membranes for ammonia separation, and carbon-negative technologies. Her work combines materials science, catalysis, and reaction engineering to address climate challenges.
Notable Achievements:
- Recipient of WPI’s Women’s Young Investigator Fellowship and Carbon Footprint Challenge Award
- Scialog Fellow for Negative Emissions Science (2020)
- Over 40 peer-reviewed publications and two U.S. patents
Lab & Students: The Liguori Lab at Clarkson focuses on membrane innovation and hosts students like Omid Jazani, Moses Adejumo, and Abdulkadir Muhammad Zabi. Recent lab milestones include presentations at the North American Membrane Society (NAMS) and travel awards for students.
Grants & Funding: Active research projects include DOE-funded initiatives on blue hydrogen production and ammonia synthesis. She collaborates with industry and academic partners to advance sustainable energy solutions.
