Professor Simona Francese is a globally recognized expert in Forensic and Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry at Sheffield Hallam University. She leads the Sheffield Multi-Modal Imaging Centre and heads the Centre for Mass Spectrometry Imaging. Her work focuses on MALDI MS Imaging applications for forensic analysis of fingermarks, blood, and clinical diagnostics. Key roles include Chair of Bioanalytical Science in the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre and collaboration with organizations like the Home Office, NHS, and DSTL.
She holds a PhD and has over 100 publications, £1.8M in grants, and pioneered techniques adopted in police casework. Her research bridges forensic science and clinical applications, such as non-invasive breast cancer detection via fingertip smears. Awards include the 2015 'Inspirational Woman' title and Proteomass’s 2022 Career Award.
Teaching spans BSc/MSc programs in Analytical Chemistry and Forensic Science, with modules like Separation Techniques and Advanced Analytical Science.
