Professor Simon Turner holds a joint position at Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) and the Animal Welfare Food Security Challenge Centre, focusing on fundamental drivers of individual variation in social behaviour to address welfare challenges in livestock. His research uses pig aggression as a model system due to its economic and welfare impacts, while also investigating maternal body condition effects on calf welfare and stress-microbiome interactions in beef cattle.
He leads multiple BBSRC-funded projects developing strategies to improve pig welfare through nutritional interventions, cognitive assessment, and social competence genetics. Professor Turner maintains extensive international collaborations across Europe and North America, with research translating into practical solutions for livestock management and welfare assessment frameworks.
