Dr. Simon Troelstra is a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Science, Department of Earth and Climate at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research focuses on paleoclimatology, Quaternary geology, and sedimentology, with a particular emphasis on reconstructing environmental and climatic changes through geochemical and micropaleontological analyses. He has contributed to over 80 peer-reviewed articles and supervised four PhD theses.
- Expertise: Holocene-Pleistocene transitions, foraminifera biostratigraphy, storm surge dynamics, and paleoflood reconstructions
- Key locations: Java (Indonesia), the Netherlands, Greenland, and the North Atlantic
His work integrates sediment core analysis, optical dating, and multi-proxy environmental datasets to address questions about sea-level changes, volcanic impacts, and human-environment interactions. Notable studies include reinterpreting hominin-bearing beds in Java and documenting rapid flood intensification during the Younger Dryas.
