Professor Simon Pinnegar is a faculty member at the University of New South Wales within the School of Arts, Design & Architecture. He serves as a key researcher and leader at the City Futures Research Centre, where he directs work on housing markets and public housing estate renewal projects including the longitudinal analysis of Bonnyrigg regeneration.
Simon's educational background includes:
- First Class Honours in geography from the University of Oxford (1992)
- MSc in Geographical Information Systems from Keele University
- MA in geography (passed with distinction) from Carleton University
- PhD from University College London (1999)
His research expertise spans metropolitan planning, urban regeneration, and affordable housing policy. He leads the Centre's work on housing markets and public housing renewal, examining implementation of metropolitan strategies and drivers of suburban reinvestment through the knockdown rebuild process. His research connects theoretical concepts of sustainable development with practical urban planning applications.
Simon teaches in the Masters of Planning program and has supervised multiple PhD students. He previously served as Director of the UNSW-UWS AHURI Research Centre (2008-2009) and worked as a Senior Research Officer at the UK Department for Communities and Local Government, where he provided analytical support on housing market analysis, urban regeneration, and sustainable communities.
