Professor Simon Parson holds the Regius Chair of Anatomy at the University of Aberdeen, within the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition. His academic career includes roles at the University of Leeds (Lecturer, 1995), University of Edinburgh (Senior Lecturer, 2006), and University of Aberdeen (Professor, 2013). He is a Fellow of the Anatomical Society (FAS) and the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB).
Education: BSc Zoology (University of Durham, 1987), PhD Neuroscience (University of Edinburgh, 1990).
Research focuses on Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), exploring systemic involvement in neurodegeneration, cardiovascular pathology, and hypoxia effects. Key interests include SMA’s impact on the heart, blood vessels, and metabolic dysfunction. Collaborations span institutions like the University of Edinburgh, UCL, and Johns Hopkins University. Recent work highlights non-neuronal pathologies in SMA and their therapeutic implications.
Publications (2013–2024) emphasize SMA’s multi-organ involvement, including retinal vasculature biomarkers, fatty liver disease models, and surgical decision-making dynamics. Notable contributions include advocating newborn SMA screening in Scotland and studies on SARS-CoV-2 neutralization by embalming solutions.
Awards: FAS, FRSB, and grants from SMA Europe and the Anatomical Society. Teaching responsibilities include anatomy for medical and science students. He chairs key university committees on teaching, safety, and curriculum development.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Institute of Medical Sciences, collaborating with technology hubs like the Microscopy and Histology Core Facility and the Genomics Hub. Research integrates histology, molecular biology, and clinical studies to advance SMA understanding and therapies.
