Professor Simon Parker holds a Chair in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of York. He previously served as Director of the School of Social and Political Sciences (2010–2016) and held visiting positions at the University of British Columbia (2007) and the London School of Economics (2014). His research focuses on urban studies, migration policy, and European politics, particularly Italy.
Education: PhD in Social and Political Sciences from the University of Cambridge (1992), Junior Research Fellowship at Jesus College, Oxford (1992–1995), and postdoctoral roles at University College London (1998–1999).
Research interests include urban theory, asylum policies, socio-spatial informatics, and comparative European politics. He co-directs the Centre for Urban Research (CURB) and chairs York’s Migration Network (MigNet). Recent projects examine London’s migration history (1880–present), EU nationals post-Brexit, and refugee governance in Germany.
Publications span urban governance, migration crises, and Italian political history. He co-edited The New Italian Republic (1996) and authored Urban Theory and the Urban Experience (2015). Current ESRC-funded research explores Mediterranean refugee movements and Brexit implications for citizenship.
Teaching includes undergraduate modules on Foucault’s governmentality and graduate courses on migration politics. Supervises PhDs on topics like asylum housing, Olympic urbanism, and migrant integration.
Grants include ESRC funding for Brexit governance (2020–2023) and refugee policy studies (2015–present). Collaborates with institutions like the London School of Economics and York Law School. Editorial roles include advisory boards for International Journal of Urban and Regional Research and CITY.
