Simon Palfrey is a Professor of English Literature and Tutorial Fellow at Brasenose College, University of Oxford. His research focuses on the interplay between literary forms and philosophical critique, particularly in Early Modern and Romantic literature. He is renowned for innovative projects like Demons Land, a multimedia exploration of Spenser’s Faerie Queene’s societal impact, and co-authored the critical fiction Macbeth, Macbeth. His work bridges literary analysis with interdisciplinary art, history, and philosophy.
Research interests include Shakespearean tragedy, Spenser’s epic poetry, and the philosophical underpinnings of literary criticism. He has curated major exhibitions, including the Bodleian’s Shakespeare’s Dead, and edited influential series like Shakespeare Now!. Awards include the David Bevington Prize for Shakespeare in Parts.
Teaching spans undergraduate period courses (1550–1830) and graduate seminars on Shakespeare and Spenser. Current projects include a book intertwining Spenser’s poem with the Demons Land project’s global resonances, emphasizing history as imaginative possession.
Collaborations with indigenous Australian artists highlight his commitment to cross-cultural dialogue. His work is marked by experimental methodologies, seeking new forms of literary scholarship that marry critical rigor with creative expression.
