Simon Murphy is an Associate Professor in Astrophysics at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), located at the Springfield Campus. He is affiliated with the School of Mathematics, Physics and Computing. Holding a BSc from the University of Manchester and a PhD from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), he is an ARC Future Fellow specializing in asteroseismology.
His research focuses on stellar pulsation models to characterize stellar masses, ages, and metallicities. Key areas include: pulsating A/F stars (e.g., delta Scuti stars), stellar chemical peculiarities (e.g., λ Bootis phenomenon), and pulsation timing analysis for binary system detection. He also contributes to understanding disequilibrium nuclear fusion reactions in pre-main-sequence stars.
Simon is part of the UniSQ Centre for Astrophysics, engaged in projects like the MINERVA-Australis telescope network and the Twinkle Space Mission. He develops tools for astronomical research, including the ADSref publication-list generator.
Media engagements include ABC News segments and podcast appearances (e.g., Shirtloads of Science). His work bridges computational astrophysics with observational astronomy, emphasizing data-driven approaches to stellar structure and evolution.
