Simon Magennis is an Associate Professor of Accounting at the Bissett School of Business, Mount Royal University. He holds a BA in Accounting & Finance, MBS in Accounting, and BSc in Education from Dublin City University, along with Chartered Accountant (Ireland) and CPA (Alberta) qualifications. His professional career includes over 20 years of teaching in accounting and finance, spanning institutions in Ireland and Canada.
His research focuses on international financial reporting standards (IFRS), nonprofit organizational management, and historical accounting technologies. Notable works include a case study on the Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations (CCVO) and explorations of accounting’s role in 18th-century colonial contexts. He has been recognized with the CPA Education Foundation Teaching Award twice (2015 and 2020).
Teaching specialties include Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, and Auditing, often using team-based learning. He mentors student research projects and contributes to university governance through roles like Bissett Accounting Student Society faculty representative and hiring committee member. Community involvement includes nonprofit case competitions and sustainability reporting advocacy.
